ALABASTER — Thompson High School celebrated the Class of 2025 during its annual commencement ceremony at UAB’s Bartow Arena on Tuesday, May 20. A total of 558 graduates walked across the stage, culminating years of hard work, determination, and growth.

The evening featured remarks from school and community leaders and a keynote address from Dr. Charles Karr, president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Dr. Karr offered encouragement and reflection as graduates prepared to take their next steps.

“Graduates, this is a time to celebrate your success, cherish friendships you’ve made, and to celebrate the impact you have made,” Karr told the Class of 2025.

Also addressing the crowd was Dr. Wayne Vickers, Superintendent of Alabaster City Schools, who praised the graduating class not just for their accomplishments but for the strength of character they developed along the way.

“Tonight, when I look at you, I don’t just see students,” Vickers said. “I see stories. Stories of quiet determination and bold ambition. Of lessons learned the hard way and triumphs earned through grit.”

Dr. Wesley Hester, Principal of Thompson High School and ACS Assistant Superintendent, extended appreciation to those who helped shape the graduates’ success. He noted how students will soon disperse in all directions, whether it be college, career, military, or other pathways. He credited parents/families for their roles in positively shaping seniors.

“I admire the quality, skills, and character you have cultivated within our seniors,” Hester said to faculty, staff, and families. “Your efforts certainly correlate to their success and achievements.”

Dr. Vickers reminded graduates of the journey that began back in 2012—their kindergarten year—and how far they’ve come in a world that continues to change rapidly. The Class of 2025, he noted, has earned more than $31 million in scholarships, competed at elite levels in all areas, and demonstrated leadership for others to emulate.

“You’ve left a legacy—not just in our hallways, but in the hearts of those who walked them with you,” Vickers added. “This is not the end. It’s the beginning—the start of something that is still unfolding, written by your choices, your courage, and your dreams.”

Thompson High School’s graduation ceremony brought together families, faculty, and city leaders, including Mayor Scott Brakefield and members of the Alabaster City Schools Board of Education.

Citing statistics special to the Class of 2025, Board of Education President Mr. Adam Mosley noted this class's two National Merit Semifinalists, record scholarship offerings, and the twelve students heading into various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

"The Class of 2025 has been one of the most decorated in Thompson history and has given us plenty of reasons to be proud," Moseley said. "Needless to say, this class has been exceptional on many levels."

The ceremony followed cherished senior-year traditions such as the Parade of Graduates, where students visited their former elementary and intermediate schools to reconnect with past teachers and inspire younger students. Another highlight of the Class of 2025’s final days was Senior Honors Night, held on May 15, where a remarkable 1,370 honor cords were bestowed upon seniors. The event was orchestrated by Mrs. Pam Vickers, Thompson High School’s College and Career Counselor. Mrs. Vickers and other THS staff highlighted the tremendous accomplishments of seniors, noting outstanding GPAs and scholarships.

With a graduation rate nearing 100%, Thompson High School continues to demonstrate its excellence in preparing students for myriad paths, including college, military service, and careers.

Superintendent Dr. Vickers concluded his remarks to the Class of 2025 with a message of hope and a call to remember their roots.

“Wherever you go and whatever you do—remember where you came from. This school. This community. Your people. They helped build the foundation you now stand on.”
