⚡️Hair-Taising Science at TIS⚡️
Our young scientists have been “positively” charged with excitement this week! Our students got hands on with the Van de Graaf generator, exploring the shocking world of electrostatics.
From watching their hair stand on end to seeing tiny lightning bolts jump between spheres, it’s been an electrifying lesson in how electrons move and react. There’s nothing quite like seeing physics in action to make a concept “stick!”
What’s Happening?
The generator uses a moving belt to accommodate a high voltage on a hollow metal globe. When our students touch it, the excess electrons spread across their bodies, and since like charges repel their hair, tries to get as far away from every other strand as possible!
The results! A lot of laughs, a few startled “oohs” and a deep dive into the laws of physics.
Also, a great big thank you to our amazing PTO for granting the STEAM Lab with our new Van de Graaf generator. We loved it.

Our STEAM students turned into structural engineers this week! The mission? Use the Engineering Design Process to build a structure that could survive on our seismic shake table.
Students had to think beyond just height and focus on the power of geometrical shapes. They quickly discovered why triangles are an engineer’s best friends and their ability to distribute weight and resist deforming makes them the "MVPs" of earthquake-resistant design!
