ALABASTER, Ala. — Thompson Middle School’s 8th grade art students have once again showcased their creativity and design skills through participation in the annual Lions Club Peace Poster Contest. This marks the fourth time in the past six years that TMS art classes have taken part in the international competition, which promotes peace, unity, and global understanding through art.

This year’s theme, “Together as One,” inspired 34 eighth-grade students to create original posters that reflect their personal visions of harmony and cooperation. Under the guidance of their art instructor, students explored the principles of design, learned key vocabulary, and developed an understanding of the design process used in professional advertising and communication.

After completing their posters, students participated in a school-wide competition judged by staff members Kecia McAlpine, Candice Jenkins, and Shelli Abernathy. The top three winning designs from TMS will be forwarded to the Alabaster Lions Club, where local judges will select one poster to advance to the regional level. From there, winners move on to national and ultimately international rounds.

At the international level, the grand prize includes a $5,000 award, a trophy, and an all-expenses-paid trip for the student and a family member to attend the awards ceremony. Additional international prizes of $500 are also presented to merit winners.

Here at home, the top TMS students receive certificates and art supply prizes for their achievements. TMS Lions Club International Peace Poster Competition school winners are:

  • First Place: Detzani Perez Valderramos

  • Second Place,:Jada White

  • Third Place: Lila Aikman
