Thompson Middle School’s 7th grade honors science students embarked on an exciting four-day field trip to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab from Sunday, October 26 through Wednesday, October 29. The trip gave students a hands-on opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world marine science experiences.
During their stay, students explored the Alabama Aquarium, where they observed native marine life and learned about the diverse ecosystems found along the Gulf Coast. They also visited historic Fort Gaines, gaining insight into Alabama’s coastal history and its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay.
The trip included visits to the Dauphin Island Shell Mounds, where students studied ancient geological formations and discussed the importance of barrier islands to coastal ecology. Students also took part in a marsh exploration, observing plant and animal adaptations in one of the region’s most vital and delicate environments.
The field trip combined science, history, and adventure, offering students an unforgettable educational experience that strengthened their understanding of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.
Thank you to teachers Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Mann, Mrs. Dunning, Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Chinoski for facilitating this experience for our students.
