Alabaster, AL – At Thompson Middle School, a new initiative is brewing—literally and figuratively. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Mrs. Hyde and Ms. Morgan, a coffee cart program is helping students develop real-world skills right in the heart of their school.

Launched earlier this year, the program offers students an opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that strengthen their job readiness, communication, and daily living skills. Each Thursday, in partnership with the school’s Occupational Therapy (OT) department, students prepare a fresh snack to sell. The offerings vary each week and have already included seasonal pumpkin bread, sweet and salty Chex mix, and delicious homemade brownies.

Fridays are just as exciting. After receiving staff orders through a Google Form, students get to work preparing and packaging the items, in addition to preparing the coffee orders. Some even take part in delivering the orders around the school, giving them valuable practice in navigating real-life social and workplace interactions.

The coffee cart program is quickly becoming a highlight for both students and staff, offering a warm and meaningful way to connect, learn, and grow.
