building words, building confidence

Here at TIS, great learning doesn’t happen in isolation, it happens through collaboration. This month, our reading coach, Mrs. Atkins, and a Ms. Lowery are working together to design engaging, meaningful vocabulary lessons that help students grow as confident readers and communicators. Together, they focus on helping students use new words by speaking them, writing them, and recognizing them in real texts.

Lessons often include interactive activities such as word games, collaborative discussions, and creative challenges that encourage students to think critically about how words work. Students might act out vocabulary terms, create visual representations, or apply new words in short writing pieces connected to what they are reading in class. This hands-on approach keeps learning fun while reinforcing important academic language.

Co-planning is a key part of their success. They are meeting regularly to review student progress, adjust instruction, and share ideas for keeping vocabulary instruction fresh and relevant. The results have been exciting to see. Students are more eager to participate in discussions, more confident in their writing, and more willing to experiment with new words. Most importantly, they are discovering that vocabulary isn’t just a list to study, it’s a powerful tool for expressing ideas and understanding the world around them.

We’re proud of the teamwork happening in our classrooms and grateful for educators who collaborate to create rich, engaging learning experiences for our students.vocabulary instruction
