What Is Constitution Day?
Every year on September 17, Americans celebrate Constitution Day, the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. This historic document established the principles of our government, protecting the rights and freedoms that guide our nation today. Constitution Day reminds us of the importance of democracy, the rule of law, and active citizenship.
Why It Matters to Students
Learning about the Constitution helps students understand how our government works and why civic engagement is essential. It’s a chance to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the responsibilities that come with them.
How Our School Celebrated
To bring the Constitution to life, many classes participated in creative activities:
Class Constitutions – Students in Mrs. Layton's class worked together to write and sign their own agreements for a positive classroom community.
Amendment Explorations – Mrs. Sanders' classes proposed and debated changes to their class rules, seeing how amendments help the Constitution stay relevant.
Preamble Puzzles – Groups raced to arrange the Preamble’s words in the correct order in Ms. Harris' class, learning its meaning along the way.
Research on the Signers – Students researched the original delegates and shared fun facts about the Founding Fathers in many classes!
Through these activities, our students discovered that the Constitution isn’t just a historical document—it’s a living guide for fairness, cooperation, and democracy.
