Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of our new employees with a short Q&A. From fun facts to favorite hobbies, this is a chance to learn a little more about the people joining our school family.
Let’s get started!
This week, we are introducing 3rd grade teacher, Dr. Alisha Wheeler
What’s your role at Meadow View, and what are you most excited about this year?
I'm elated to be joining the third grade team at Meadow View this year! I'm excited about serving students in my own community, and I'm also excited about working alongside the amazing teachers, staff, and administrators that I've had the pleasure of meeting over the past two years.
Where are you from, and what brought you to our school?
I am from Hoover, AL. I reside in Alabaster, so my daughter is a student at MVES. From her first year as a student up until now, I have felt nothing but love when I have entered the school. That's what brought me to Meadow View!
How long have you been in education, and what inspired you to become a teacher/staff member?
I've been an educator for 25 years. As a child, I remember having teachers who I loved and teachers who made every day feel heavy. This inspired me to go into the teaching field. I wanted to be the kind of teacher who maintained a loving and welcoming classroom.
What’s your favorite subject or part of the school day, and why?
Math is my favorite subject to teach because there are so many different ways students can solve problems. I also love recess, though! It's a time I can truly get to know my students.
Do you have a favorite teaching memory or moment that stands out to you?
There are many memories that come to mind as highlights in my career, but I think the top memories are the times I've been invited to high school and college graduations for children I taught in elementary school. It is a full- circle moment!
What do you like to do when you’re not at school?
I love baking with daughter when I'm not at school. We also love playing outside!
What’s something your students or coworkers might be surprised to learn about you?
Many people are surprised to find out that I'm an introvert. I can be outgoing when I'm interacting with others, but I enjoy my quiet time alone.
Do you have a favorite children’s book or quote about learning? My favorite children's book is Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe. I read it with my mom as a child, and I loved bringing it into my classroom as a teacher. My favorite quote about learning comes from the incomparable Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - "Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education."
What’s one goal you have for your first year at Meadow View?
My goal for this year is to learn how things operate within Meadow View. Though I have taught for many years, every school is different, and I look forward to learning all the little things that help the school run so well.
What makes you feel most encouraged or supported at work?
I feel encouraged and supported at work when there is true comradery in the building. Whether it's working towards a common goal during planning or being there for each other when dealing with personal tribulations, I think it is blessing to have coworkers who have your back. A smile, a hug, or a quick "Good morning" can start your day in an amazing way. And of course, a cup of coffee from 7Brew helps, too!
