new employee

We’re excited to introduce a new series this summer to help you get to know the newest members of our Meadow View team. Each week, we’ll be highlighting one of our new employees with a short Q&A. From fun facts to favorite hobbies, this is a chance to learn a little more about the people joining our school family.

Let’s get started!

This week, we are introducing 1st grade teacher, Ms. Kailey Sumrall!

1. What’s your role at Meadow View, and what are you most excited about this year?
My role at Meadow View is serving as a first-grade teacher, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin my very first year in the classroom! I’m especially looking forward to building strong relationships with my students and their families, creating a fun and safe learning environment, and watching each child grow academically and personally throughout the year. First grade is such a big year full of milestones, and I’m thrilled to be a part of each student’s journey!

2. Where are you from, and what brought you to our school?
I’m from Thorsby, Alabama, a small town not too far from here. What brought me to Meadow View was the warm and welcoming atmosphere I felt from the very beginning. I’ve always heard great things about the community and staff here and knew it was the perfect place to start my teaching journey. I’m so excited to be part of a school that feels like home and truly puts students first!

3. How long have you been in education, and what inspired you to become a teacher/staff member?
I recently graduated from Troy University with a degree in Elementary Education, so this is my very first year in the classroom! I’ve always had a passion for working with children, and during my time at Troy, I had so many hands-on experiences that confirmed my love for teaching. What inspired me most was seeing the impact a caring and supportive teacher can have on a child’s life. I’m excited to be that person for my students and help them grow, learn, and believe in themselves every single day.

4. What’s your favorite subject or part of the school day, and why?
Honestly, I enjoy the entire school day! From the moment my students arrive to the time they head home, each part of our day is filled with something meaningful. Whether it’s starting the morning with warm greetings, diving into engaging lessons, exploring stories during reading time, or tackling fun math activities, every moment brings joy. It’s those small, special interactions throughout the day that make teaching so fulfilling for me.

5. Do you have a favorite teaching memory or moment that stands out to you?
During my internship, I was able to see a struggling reader reach his reading goal toward the end of the year. This moment was so special after working closely with him and seeing his growth over time. We spent so many days practicing together, celebrating small wins, and building his confidence. Watching him meet his goal and feel proud of himself was such a powerful reminder of the impact teachers can have. It’s a moment I’ll always carry with me and one that continues to inspire me as I begin my own teaching journey.

6. What do you like to do when you’re not at school?
Outside of school, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends. Cooking and crafting are some of my favorite ways to relax, and I love taking my dog along on walks to enjoy the fresh air. Taking these moments for myself helps me stay energized and ready to give my best to my students every day.

7. What’s something your students or coworkers might be surprised to learn about you?
Something my students or coworkers might be surprised to learn about me is that I was really involved in sports growing up. I played basketball and ran track in high school, and I even played club basketball during college.

8. Do you have a favorite children’s book or quote about learning?
My favorite children’s book is Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen. I love this book because it shows how a classroom can be more than just a place to learn—it can be a caring, supportive family where everyone looks out for each other. It reminds students that kindness, respect, and teamwork help us all grow together, which is exactly the kind of community I want to build in my classroom.

9. What’s one goal you have for your first year at Meadow View?
One goal I have for my first year at Meadowview is to build strong, positive relationships not only with my students and their families but also with my colleagues. I believe that when students feel supported and connected, they are more confident and eager to learn. At the same time, working closely with fellow teachers creates a collaborative environment that helps me grow professionally and provide the best experience for my students. Creating this welcoming community is my top priority as I start my teaching journey.

10. What makes you feel most encouraged or supported at work?
What makes me feel most encouraged and supported at work is having a team of colleagues who are willing to share ideas, offer advice, and celebrate successes together. Knowing that I can ask questions and learn from others helps me feel confident as I grow in my role. Also, when students and families show appreciation and engage in the learning process, it reminds me why I chose this career and motivates me every day.
