staff spotlight

This week's Staff Spotlight goes to Mrs. April Brower, Kindergarten teacher!

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in education?

This is more of a "who" inspired me. My Granddaddy, he taught Sunday School in the grade I was in until middle school.  I had two teachers that impacted my life and education because they took the time to build the relationship and fostered my love for learning. Mary Jo Buff and Jan Rita Jordan-Bonner were two of the best teachers.

2. What’s your favorite part of working with students? Building relationships and having authentic moments with them. (sitting in the floor putting together a puzzle, playing a game or just having a chit-chat)

3. If you weren’t in education, what do you think you’d be doing? I don't know.  I know I would still be working with children in some capacity.

4. Do you have any professional goals you’re working on this year? I always have a goal... it may be to turn things in on time or to keep my desk clean.  (Ha ha, these are my life goals) However, I learn something new every day.  I learn from my students, my esteemed colleagues and from professional development that our school/school system provides.

5. What’s one thing you love most about our school community? When you need this community, they show up.

6. Is there a particular moment in the school year you look forward to each year? My end of the year celebration... my class puts on a little show for their families.  There is always laughter and tears.

7. Do you have any hobbies or hidden talents? I like to read and spend time with my dogs, Missy and Gumbo.

8. What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you? I began Thompson High School in 10th grade, it was my seventh school.

9. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I would definitely go back to Italy for the history, food and experience.  I would like to see more of Europe.

10. What’s a food you can never say no to? Bean dip and salsa
