Free school breakfast

ALABASTER, Ala. — Alabaster City Schools has been awarded the Alabama School Breakfast Grant, allowing the district to provide breakfast at no cost to all students through its Universal Breakfast program.

Beginning Friday, May 1, every student in Alabaster City Schools will have access to a nutritious morning meal, regardless of income eligibility. The grant is designed to reduce the financial burden on both families and schools while ensuring that all students start their day ready to learn.

District leaders say the expansion of free breakfast is an important step in supporting student success both inside and outside the classroom. Research consistently shows that students who eat a healthy breakfast demonstrate improved focus, better behavior, and stronger academic performance. Access to nutritious meals has also been linked to higher reading and math scores, improved concentration, healthier lifestyles, and reduced absenteeism.

Across Alabama, no-cost school breakfast programs continue to grow in impact. Since 2019, access to these meals has doubled statewide, with more than 45 million breakfasts served annually. These programs play a critical role in promoting student well-being and creating a strong foundation for learning each day.

In addition to supporting students, the program also benefits the broader community by incorporating food systems that support local agriculture.

By expanding access to free breakfast, Alabaster City Schools is reinforcing its commitment to student wellness and academic achievement, ensuring every student has the opportunity for a strong start and a strong finish each school day.
