Coach Powell is entering his fourth season at THS. In addition to teaching Physical Education, he also serves as the Head Men's Basketball coach.
He has led the Warriors to 57 wins and 32 losses over the past three seasons, including a regional appearance in 2019. That is the first time that the Warriors have posted consecutive 20+ win seasons since 1989. The 2019-2020 team held a 3.78 team GPA and was ranked in every single one of the top 10 ASWA Class 7A basketball polls, including as high as #3! The 2020-2021 team GPA was 4.11. In three seasons at THS, Coach Powell has had 5 players go on to play basketball collegiately.
Before arriving at THS, he spent the past seven seasons in the same role at Spanish Fort High School where he compiled a 156-66 record and four area championships. His teams spent many weeks ranked in the top 10 of the ASWA polls. Coach Powell spent the two seasons prior at Gulf Shores High School, where he won another area championship in 2010.
Coach Powell spent time at The University of Alabama under Coach Mark Gottfried where he served as a team manager for three years and as a graduate assistant coach during the 2008-2009 season. He is a member of the capstone’s A-Club and also serves as the Administrative Assistant for the AHSAA for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star basketball game. Furthermore, Coach Powell and his wife are the founders of the statewide autism awareness event "Shooting 2 Change." Coach Powell and his wife Jenilee have three children: Dane (10), Parker (9), and Livi Caroline (4).
