Program Description
The Thompson bowling program is made up of varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams for both boys and girls. Bowling is a winter sport and the first day of allowable practice will be the first Monday in October for both the middle and high school teams. The middle school program will conclude upon the completion of the Metro Championship Tournament in the first or second week of December. The high school program will go to the end of January when the AHSAA State Championship Tournament is held.
The middle schools are allowed a maximum of 12 match dates and two tournaments during the season. The high school teams are allowed a maximum of 18 match dates and 5 tournaments, not including the state championships.
History
The AHSAA brought back high school bowling in 2015 as an emerging sport after being discontinued in 1978 and has continued to grow each year since 2015. It became a full member sport in 2016. There are currently two classifications for bowling in Alabama, 1A-5A and 6A-7A. Both Thompson High School and Thompson Middle School was part of the 2015 inaugural year and has been a strong participant each year since.
