Welcome to the Health Sciences Academy

  • The Health Sciences Academy is designed to help students who want to go into a health-related profession and to get them started early in learning the fundamentals.

Students are introduced to a wide range of health careers, medical terminology, safety in health care, and basic structure and functions of the human body.

Upper-level courses include therapeutic services, emergency services and sports medicine, with opportunities in advanced sports medicine, emergency medical technician and internship.

Internship opportunities include physical therapy, radiology, sports medicine, dental and nursing.

New for 2020! Biomedical Science

  • Biomedical Science is a track of the Health Science Academy where students can engage in activities where they examine the human body structures and interactions to explore the prevention, diagnosis, & treatment of disease and work collaboratively to understand and design solutions to the most pressing problems facing health today and in the future. Each course in the Biomedical Science sequence will build on the skills and knowledge they gain from the foundation course.

In the introductory class, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, medical history, and explore medical treatments that may have saved the person's life. This course will introduce them to basic biology related to medicine and research while allowing them to have hands-on experiments to solve problems.

Topics such as: DNA, human body systems, and causes of infectious disease are reviewed and explored in detail. Some activities that will be offered through this track are isolating DNA from plant cells, dissecting sheep hearts, measuring blood pressure and EKG's, and learning to view cells under a microscope. Some examples of careers related to Biomedical Science are doctor, dentist, research specialist, Physicians' Assistant, surgeon, Pharmacist, biomedical engineer and Health Information Specialist.
