2022/2023 – 8th Grade Math Lab Course Syllabus
Course Overview: This course is designed to work with students on sharpening the basic math skills necessary to be successful independent learners. .
Expectations/ Responsibilities: Each student in this class is a young adult on the verge of going to Thompson High School. This class is designed to help you with the skills necessary to be successful when you get there. As you get older, the responsibilities and expectations become greater. In this class, and in your other classes, we expect you to act like a young adult, and take it upon yourself to do the things necessary to be a successful 8th grade student. For quality instruction and real learning to take place, students need to refrain from any action that would cause the teaching/ learning pr ocess to be disrupted. The Alabaster City Schools Code of Conduct will be followed, and conferences will be scheduled with the parents of those students who continually make poor choices.
Course Standards: This course will be following the grade academic standards that are implemented for math instruction.
Required Materials: Composition book, pencil, and calculator every day!
Grading Scale: (A - 90 - 100) (B - 80 - 89) (C - 70 – 79) (D - 60 - 69) (F - 59 – below)
Grades for this course will include the following:
- Weekly Bell Ringer Check: (Teacher Choice) Unit concepts taught daily.
- Unit Bell Ringer Test: (Objective Test) At the conclusion of the bell ringer unit
- Dreambox Program Work: (Teacher Choice) Individual work completed using this program. Based on time spent and completion of activities. Students must complete 90 min of online time per week, and complete at least 5 lessons per week.
- Homework: (Homework) One weekly homework assignment
5.) Nine Weeks Exam – (Objective Test) Covers bell ringer units for the nine weeks
*****The overall grade for this class will be determined each nine weeks from the above. Teachers Choice, Objective Tests and Homework will account for 90% of the student’s grade. The remaining 10% will be from the nine weeks exam.
Classroom Management:
I only have two rules for my classroom.
- Any behavior that disrupts the learning process in my room is considered an infraction.
- Keep my room clean
We will utilize a three strike policy.

- Phone call/email home – then referral to administration
