Mrs. Lula K. (Kathy) Cunningham

My name is Mrs. Lula K. Cunningham, aka Kathy. I have been married for 29 years to Kelvin (Kirk) Cunningham. Kirk spent most of his employment years as a scrub and operating room tech before succumbing to Stage 4 Renal Failure due to Polycystic Kidney Disease. However, my niece, who is an educator, donated her kidney in 2015 when she was 25 years old. Kirk and I have three children. Kirstan, age 28, is the Coordinator of Recruitment and Orientation at his alma mater, The University of West Alabama. Kayla, age 23, is also a graduate of UWA and is currently preparing for graduate school. Korey, age 22, is a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati. However, he is continuing his studies as he completes his final season on the university’s football team (#71, BIG COUNTRY) at the starting, left tackle position after red-shirting his freshman year. As a family, we enjoy Sunday dinners and extended family gatherings.

I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Montevallo in December of 1987 and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education in December of 2005 from the same university. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I worked as a counselor at the Developing Alabama Youth Program for students who needed academic remediation and/or behavior modification. Next, I became a Social Worker for foster and adoptive children for the Shelby County Department of Human Resources, then The Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes, and finally for Children’s Aid Society. After my endeavors as a Social Worker, I decided to pursue a career in education.

This is my 12th year at Creek View Elementary School where I have taught kindergarten and first grade. I am currently a first grade teacher. My overall goal as a teacher is to provide a safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment for my students. I set high, but realistic expectations for my learners in anticipation that they will reach their full academic and social potential. In order for them to achieve the latter, I plan to provide a variety of experiences such as independent practice, hands-on experiences, and cooperative learning and play. I am very passionate about teaching and so very excited about partnering with parents and children throughout the school year.
