Kim Bice

I began my career as a first grade teacher at Creek View Elementary in 1996. I taught for 5.5 years before going on bedrest with twins and taking a year’s leave of absence.  During those years at CVES, I pursued a master’s degree and co-taught ED 101 at my alma mater, the University of Montevallo.  While on sabbatical from the classroom, I continued to teach a few master’s classes at night. I re-entered the public school setting in 2003 and taught first grade two more years until our school became an Alabama Reading Initiative site.  At that point, having discovered how much I enjoyed working with adult learners, I became an Alabama Reading Initiative Coach and have loved every minute of it since!

As a coach, I have a dual role of supporting both teachers and students. I support curriculum desgin and implemenation as well as strategic instructional strategies in the classroom.  I also support students through co-teaching and facilitating intervention services.  Along with school leadership, we supervise our Title 1 Targeted Assistance plan, managing the flow of students into and out of intervention and communicating with parents through our PST (problem-solving team) process.

For the last three years, I have been worked toward National Board certification in the area closest to my heart - Literacy!  Components are submitted and I'm anxiously awaiting scores. It has been immensely satisfying to immerse myself in reflective practice and work together with a cohort of professionals who are like-minded.
